Non-Urgent Elective Surgeries Canceled during COVID-19

For March 31, 2020, Surgical Services are doing Emergency Services Only.

For March 30, 2020, Surgical Services are doing Emergency Surgeries Only.
Burlington, CO - Effective Tuesday, March 17, Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital canceled all non-urgent elective surgeries until further notice to help conserve supplies that may be needed in the fight against COVID-19.

Prior to the Executive Order by Colorado Governor Jared Polis, KCCMH was canceling surgeries that involve otherwise healthy patients. Some examples of cases/surgeries affected include screening colonoscopies and gallbladders.

CEO, Kelly Duke, “I want to be proactive to the needs of our current patients, but ready for those COVID-19 patients not yet identified. By cancelling all non-urgent elective surgeries now, we can provide our current patients with plenty of time to adjust their schedule. This change will not impact our OB patients, C-sections already scheduled, or those that are nonscheduled urgent C-sections.”

This change is expected to help conserve Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other resources that could potentially be needed to address the impacts of COVID-19.

On March 19, Colorado Governor Jared Polis issued a three-week halt to “elective and non-essential” surgeries between March 23 and April 14, 2020.
